Bukit Panjang — 4-Room HDB

The palette was set by maintenance, not mood. Everything at hand height in the kitchen is black: base cabinets, granite counter and a glass splashback behind the hob, because black hides the fingerprints, oil and scuffs that show on white within months. The upper cabinets switch to a timber-grain laminate so the kitchen does not close in, and the walls around it are left in a cement finish that does not need repainting when it gets marked.

The living room is kept simple: white walls, a timber trim running along the top of the wall, and a recessed niche lit from above for the owner's prints. A niche costs very little extra at the partition board stage and gives a display ledge that does not stick out into a narrow room. Lighting is on black track rails, so spotlights can be moved when the furniture or the artwork changes, without calling the electrician back.

Storage near the entrance is a full-height black cabinet under a copper pendant, so shoes and bags go behind closed doors instead of piling up at the door. The washer and dryer are stacked in a cement-finish recess with a light above, which takes half the floor space of side-by-side machines and keeps them out of the kitchen.

In the bathroom, black hexagon tiles line the shower behind a frameless glass screen, with a timber-grain vanity and a mirror cabinet over a top-mount basin. At the front door, a black steel gate with expanded mesh panels lets air through while the main door stands open, which matters in an HDB corridor flat.
